A REIVIEW OF OUR BAR SNACKS

Sunday, 13 May 2007  GALWAY FIRST  NEWSPAPER
Have you ever let someone in on a secret without really wanting to? Perhaps a great but as yet unknown band or a quiet pub off the beaten track with a pool table and a fully functioning jukebox. It can be unwise to disclose information about something dear to you for fear of change. Everybody will start listening to the band and the pub will be forever full with a slew of coins on the pool table and four hours of songs on the jukebox. The secret in this case is that McSwiggans have the best steak sandwich in Galway, bar none. For value, price and service the Eyre Street eatery is almost impossible to beat. The aforementioned sambo comes with a generous spread of steak on a thick slice of white grinder bread with fried onions, coleslaw, tomatoes and peppers in a tasty side salad at an unbeatable €7.50. A side order of spicy wedges with garlic mayonnaise complements this dish perfectly, but at €2.50 it might be wise to suggest the wedges to a dining companion and share their load. Another impressive feature of McSwiggans ‘Daily Grind’ bar food menu is the changing daily special at €3.95. These dishes range from a chilli hotpot to a small beef stew all with a side salad. The soup of the day comes in generous portions with brown soda bread or a fresh white roll at €2.95. Other menu highlights include a solid three-layered club sandwich, a tasty roast peppers and cream cheese panini and a delicious banoffee pie. A further attraction of dining at McSwiggans is the speed of service. Most dishes arrive within ten minutes, thereby freeing up more time in a busy lunch hour.

The verdict: One of the best lunch locations in town, and the steak sandwiches are fantastic.

The damage: €7.50.
